John does not introduce Christ's mission with salvation, blessing or even the Church. He begins with a mission statement: the Son of God was manifested to destroy the works of the devil. Every altar this series has examined—priest and king, government and culture—has assumed an answer to a question never directly asked: why does any of it matter?
Builders do not begin with drawings. They begin with purpose. Purpose determines function. Function determines form. Form never determines purpose, however impressive the structure becomes. Yet much of the Church has reversed that order, building the ministry, the business or the movement first, and only afterwards asking God to bless it.
We expose what a person is actually building by asking one question: Why? Then asking it again until the true altar is revealed. Two lives may look identical while serving entirely different kingdoms. The altar is never identified by the vocabulary used to describe it. It is identified by where the questioning stops.
"Set a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in the midst of it." Ezekiel 9:4 (AMPC)
Eliashib, entrusted with the temple storerooms, gave Israel's adversary a room inside God's house. The city simply lived with it until Nehemiah returned, was grieved, and threw the furnishings back into the street. Corruption rarely arrives as invasion. It arrives as an accommodation nobody is willing to question.

Christ is not waiting to begin His reign. He is already King, already subduing His enemies in this present age—including those hosted within our own institutions. No builder lays a foundation without first understanding the structure it is meant to carry.
The altar determines the purpose. The purpose determines the function. The function determines the form. Get the altar wrong, and even the greatest ministry, business or movement becomes a monument to the wrong kingdom. Get it right, and the smallest act of obedience becomes part of what Christ Himself is building until every enemy is made His footstool.
The question is no longer whether you are building. The question is whether what you are building is part of what Jesus is building.
